A National Award for Soorarai Pottru, a breakout in Maheshinte Prathikaram, and a role in Raayan — Dhanush's 50th film. When Provoke Lifestyle shot Aparna Balamurali for its 'Star in the Ascendant' feature, Anu did the makeup.
The Brief
Provoke's feature caught Aparna Balamurali mid-ascent: the National Award-winning Bommi of Soorarai Pottru, now playing the bold, fun-loving Meghala in Raayan, Dhanush's fiftieth film and his second as director. The shoot — with photographer Arun Gnanavel and stylist Keerthy Sampath — moved between two worlds in one day: a sculptural gold-and-black gown on a dark staircase, and a deep red silk saree in warm evening window light. Two different women, one face that had to stay hers in both.
The Look
Two looks from one base. For the staircase gown: sculpted, cooler tones with a clean nude lip, so the drama stayed with the fabric and the shadows. For the saree: the same skin warmed up, a deep wine lip and softly smoked eyes to sit inside all that red without disappearing into it. Editorial shoots reward an artist who can pivot a face in twenty minutes — not rebuild it.
Behind the Scenes
The staircase setup was lit hard and moody; the saree frames depended on a window that was only right for about forty minutes. That meant the second look had to be ready before the light was — lip depth and eye warmth pre-tested on the back of the schedule, so the switch took minutes and the golden hour went entirely to the camera.
