Ariyalur is one of the smaller and quieter districts in the state, inland from the delta and known mainly for its cement works and for Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the great Chola temple just outside Jayankondam.
Weddings here are close-knit rather than large-scale. Ceremonies are traditional, often held in modest local halls or at family homes, with the whole extended family involved in the morning.
